John Reynolds Dakota Language Scholarship Fund

The Čhaŋtóžuha Máni Dakota Language Scholarship Fund honors the life and legacy of our late board member, Čhaŋtóžuha Máni / John Reynolds. John was a founding board member of Dakhóta Iápi Okhódakičhiye (Dakota Language Society) and one of the most dedicated advocates for Dakota and Lakota language revitalization.

John’s love for the language guided his work as a teacher, organizer, and lifelong learner. He helped plan and teach at our Dakota language camps, contributed to the development of our textbooks, and reached out to Dakota and Lakota communities to encourage participation and pride in our shared language. John embodied the spirit of a true language warrior—his wit, perseverance, and humility inspired us and many others.

Although he is no longer with us, his dedication continues to light the path forward. To carry on his legacy, Dakhóta Iápi Okhódakičhiye is proud to partner with John’s family—especially his sister Dyani White Hawk—to create this language learning fund.

This scholarship will support students and community members who share John’s commitment to learning, teaching, and living the Dakota language. Through this fund, we honor his memory and ensure that his dream of a thriving Dakota-speaking community continues for generations to come.
